Julia Corns

Major: Biology/Pre-Veterinary Track

Minor: Psychology

Home town: Halethorpe, Maryland

Julia Corns has grown as a leader and collaborator during her time at UMBC. Julia initially planned to pursue a career in medicine, but after much reflection, she has shifted to veterinary medicine. As an undergraduate, Julia was open to exploring different opportunities. She developed her leadership abilities as a Resident Assistant in the UMBC residence halls, where she has served as a Lead Resident Assistant for the past academic year. In addition, Julia served as a STEM BUILD Peer Mentor and a Teaching Assistant in the Biology and Chemistry departments. After graduation, Julia will serve as a Veterinary Assistant at a local veterinary clinic and pursue further education in veterinary medicine in the near future.

A few thoughts from Julia on her time as a Sondheim Scholar:

What was your favorite Sondheim event?

The first Sondheim Retreat was a fantastic opportunity to disconnect from school and connect with fellow Sondheim Scholars. I enjoyed our conversations, mentorship, and learning more about the Baltimore community and public policy.

What is an important thing you learned about yourself at UMBC?

I learned the importance of trying out any opportunities that present themselves and to have confidence when applying for opportunities I am passionate about.

What’s an important thing you learned about the world beyond campus while you were a student at UMBC?

I learned that although the world is very vast, I can still make a meaningful impact. This can be through the relationships I build and communities I spend time with.
