Theresa Bruce, '09, to receive UMBC Outstanding Alumna award

Congratulations to Sondheim Public Affairs Scholar alumna Theresa Brucea political science and social work major from the class of 2009, who is being honored on Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2021 with UMBC's Outstanding Alumna in Social and Behavioral Sciences award.

Theresa works as a secondary social studies teacher at Baltimore's KIPP Harmony Academy. Among other honors, Theresa was named the 2021 Maryland Secondary Social Studies Teacher of the Year by the Maryland Council for Social Studies, and was also a finalist for the 2020 Baltimore City Teacher of the Year award. On top of teaching, Theresa has been involved with trying to shape curriculum and other policies in Baltimore City schools, especially in advancing equity. She serves as a member of Baltimore City Mayor Brandon Scott's Trauma-Informed Care Task Force.
