Arianna ‘Ari’ Cacic has participated in many different activities at UMBC while developing lifelong relationships with faculty, staff and her fellow students. Ari immersed herself in service to the community beyond UMBC as a Reading Partners tutor at Cherry Hill Elementary School and on an interdisciplinary Co-Lab research project where she utilized her GIS skills in Baltimore. Ari has applied her GIS and environmental science knowledge in a number of creative ways, including as a recipient of the NOAA Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship. Ari is the recipient of the UMBC Geography and Environmental Systems Department’s Tom Rabenhorst Award for Geospatial Techniques. After graduation, Ari will pursue government or non-profit work related to the environment and GIS and later in the future she plans to pursue graduate work in environmental policy and science. 

A few thoughts from Ari on her time as a Sondheim Scholar:

What is your most memorable service experience as a Sondheim Scholar? 

The time I spent with students at Cherry Hill Elementary School as a tutor with Reading Partners.

What were your favorite Sondheim events? 

Going to Annapolis to visit the Maryland State House and seeing The Fall.

What is an important thing you learned about yourself at UMBC?

I have learned how to prioritize what I want out of life over anyone else's expectations for me.
