Congratulations, Sondheim Scholars Class of 2021!

Sarah Hoover

Major: Media and Communication Studies

Minor: Visual Arts – Photography

Hometown: Laurel, MD

Sarah started at UMBC with plans to study STEM and go to pharmacy school. However, after her first year, she realized that she was more passionate about visual arts and communications, which led her to major in Media & Communication Studies and minor in Photography. Sarah is the recipient of a 2021 UMBC Department of Media & Communication Studies Award for Academic Achievement. After graduation, she plans to pursue a career in US military photojournalism and public affairs.

What were your favorite Sondheim events?

Seeing the playsA Thousand Splendid Suns and The Fall.

What are you most proud of from your time at UMBC? 

I'm proud of having stepped out of my comfort zone when I went on aGlobal Brigade to Panama for agricultural business in 2019. It was a challenging and enjoyable experience!

What's an important thing you learned about the world beyond campus while you were a student at UMBC?

I learned that everyone comes from different experiences and perspectives, and that it's good to be open minded and understanding when meeting new people and forming relationships.
